More than 1,100 high-profile signatories, including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Tristan Harris, have asked AI Labs to pause their training on platforms more powerful than GPT-4 for 6 months.

These figures defended in the open letter that “contemporary AI systems are becoming humanly competitive in general tasks, and we must ask ourselves: should we let the machines flood our information channels with propaganda and lies?”

Likewise, they argue that “such decisions should not be delegated to non-elected technological leaders. Powerful AI systems should only be developed once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks manageable.”
